Air Force to study Jacksonville for F-35 fighter base

Jacksonville’s Air National Guard Station is one of five bases that will undergo an environmental impact report to study proposed bases for the F-35 Lightning II joint strike fighter, the Air Force announced this week.

One or more of the bases will receive F-35s, a next-generation stealth fighter that will replace, among other jets, the aging F-15 Eagles now based in Jacksonville.

The other bases that will be studied are Mountain Home Air Force Base near Boise, Idaho; Hill AFB in Ogden, Utah; Burlington ANGS, Vt.; and Shaw AFB/McEntire Joint National Guard Base near Sumter, S.C

The Air Force says the reports will take up to a year to compile and will include public input. Hearings in Jacksonville and Palatka are tentatively scheduled for Feb. 8-12.
